Sporting events security is gaining universal attention, with the Boston Marathon bombing in April of 2013 and the recent terrorist threats surrounding the Sochi Olympics. As a result of the concern, sporting organizations are realizing they need to up their game when it comes to events security.
Risk Shows that Event Security Isn’t Good Enough
Baseball stadiums are no stranger to security threats and violence. With tempers, often fueled by alcohol, running high at sporting events, it’s common for isolated fights and full-on brawls to occur during games, and if a weapon is drawn, these scenarios can turn deadly. When the doors open before an event, thousands of fans stream in clutching purses, bags, and other items that could easily conceal weapons or other dangerous objects. While the current event security services at MLB games include a bag check, safety measures still need to be improved.
The MLB Requires Increase in Security for Events
Realizing that events security is incomplete at best, the MLB has said that it will require all 30 of its teams’ stadiums to up their security measures at access points, with full implementation completed by 2015. As reported by the Associated Press:
“Major League Baseball has told its 30 teams they must implement security screening for fans by then, either with hand-held metal detection or walk-through magnetometers.”
NBC Sports reports that, when asked for comment, MLB spokesman Michael Teevan said in an email:
“We have been reviewing our security procedures for many months and we will issue a security bulletin in 2014 that will include practices and procedures that are responsive to the new security environment. Fan screening will be one of the subjects addressed. We are continuing to consult with our clubs, our experts and the Department of Homeland Security, and we expect to announce specific changes after some further off-season meetings.”
What Does Increased Security Mean For Texas Rangers Fans?
If you’re planning on attending any games in 2014, be prepared to take a little more time getting from the stadium entrance to your seats! The Texas Rangers Ballpark will begin using metal detector wands to scan individuals OR require you and everyone else to walk through a metal detector gate. Try not to get upset though – these security measures are there for your protection, so that the next time you’re sitting next to an inebriated fan who’s trying to pick a fight, you won’t have to worry that a knife or gun will become part of the scenario.
