Emergency Preparedness Series- Role of Security Personnel in Fire Drill or Actual Fires.

This is the second installment in our Emergency Preparedness Series, dealing with the role of Business security and security guards in emergency situations and in preparing for them.

The role of onsite Business Security Guards in a Fire or Fire Drill
During a fire or a fire drill, it is important that you have building security personnel in your building who can safely guide everyone out of the building in an orderly fashion. Any sort of confusion, mass panic or inaction could cost many people their lives during a fire emergency.

Emergency Preparedness Starts Early

If you are in a school, an office building or anywhere else where a fire emergency could take place, it is important to be prepared for such an event ahead of time. Emergency preparedness measures such as conducting a monthly fire drill are advised. Another way to prepare for an emergency is to have building security personnel inform everyone of where the emergency exits are, as well as the escape plan during a fire.

Security Officers Trained to Stay Calm Under Pressure

It is understandable that people will start to panic or want to get to the exits as soon as possible during a fire. However, that is the worst way to handle a fire emergency. You need a group of security officials within the building who can find people who are trapped, direct traffic to the fire exits and help people who may be stuck on higher floors get to safety if the stairs are blocked.

Ensure Extinguishers are Tested Regularly and Easily Visible

Our security personnel know your business and facility, and will be aware of the location of extinguishers, giving them the opportunity to stop a major emergency before it happens. For example, knowing how to put out a grease fire or a clothing fire can prevent that fire from spreading to adjacent rooms.

You can never predict when a fire may break out in your business, school or office building. However, it is easy to prepare for such an event by having fire drills, hiring a competent security team and being able to execute an exit plan when necessary. The difference between a properly trained staff and a staff that is inexperienced in a fire emergency, can be the difference between lives saved and lives needlessly lost.
