The uniform is a very important part of being a security officer. It sets an officer apart from the general populace as an individual in a position of authority. It certainly has aesthetic advantages, but the real benefit of the uniform goes way beyond just the outward appearance. In fact, the uniform is so important, that Texas state law outlines the following necessary requirements to be met visibly on the outermost layer of any Security Officer’s uniform:
- The presence of a badge including the word “Security”
- The Officer’s Name Plate
- The Company Patch
Not all companies, or officers comply with the above fully at all times, but it is a state requirement, and companies that allow non-compliance are in danger of punishment. Their non-compliance should also be a red flag to potential clients.
Benefits of the security officers uniform
1. Provides instant recognizability.
In an emergency situation, you don’t want to have to look around to determine the right person to go to. If there’s a uniformed officer on hand, the decision is made for you, and you instantly recognize the person to alert.
2. Peace of mind for employees and customers.
When officers on hand, employees and customers are aware of the fact and reassured by their presence. The side of a well presented officer is calming, and provides reassurance.
3. Greater deterrence of crimes.
When a would-be criminals sees an officer in uniform on location, this provides a strong deterrent for crime or criminal activities. An officer in plainclothes would not provide the same warning two would be miscreants, and even if they were aware of the officers presence, the officer would not have the same authoritative air and would therefore be less of a deterrent.
4. Creates a sense of pride and belonging for the officer.
When an officer puts on the uniform, they’re able to feel a sense of pride in their own presentation, and also in their affiliation with a company that has an established and strong reputation. Many officers, especially those who work at Sterling, are proud to be a part of the organization, and wear their uniform with pride. It identifies them as part of a team of experienced professionals.
5. Is a reflection of the professionalism of the client in addition to the security company itself.
When a visitor sees a security officer on duty, their immediate thought isn’t that some 3rd party security firm has been engaged to protect the premises. Most people will subconsciously assume that the officer is and employee or direct affiliate of whatever business the officer protects, aka the security firm’s client. This makes presentation and professionalism of the utmost importance.
It is clear the uniform provides many benefits, not only in the form of presentation, but also logical, practical reasons. The officers trained by Sterling protective services are always proud of their presentation, and go above and beyond in their efforts to maintain a high-level of decorum.
